What exactly is cycling 74’s stance on the backing and support for external developers? Specifically the developers that have put together those top libraries that make max/msp what it is today. Many come from ircam but some are just random enthusiasts.

I have spent the past few days trying to make a very popular external package work. Turns out it’s been broken pretty much since launch. I don’t blame the developer since it’s seemingly one guy at ircam doing all of it but it got me thinking. 

This specific package is mentioned all over as THE physmod library for max and good libraries for physical modelling is a pretty big pull for anyone looking at this kind of software. I don’t know how other software companies handles this sort of thing but wouldn’t it be a good idea to make an effort to make sure important libraries actually works and don’t break when the developer burns out? Max/msp would be a lesser product without some of these packages.

Max throws an error (-43) when attempting to open folders or files with non-ASCII-characters in the filename. For a big database which has to support foldernames containing any kind of character I am in need for a method that supports this. Has anyone got a good idea on how to bypass this limitation? If someone is inclined to sugest node.script I would be happy if they shared the according code since I am not familiar with its syntax. JS would be fine but I believe it would only work via the native 

, which throws the same error, of course.

I am retrieving pictures within a Max project via a [umenu] whenever the onset of incoming audio is detected. Which picture is retrieved depends on the analysis of another audio signal. 

I noticed strange behaviour where the paths are not found with this mechanism, however, when I select elements in the umenu manually or send in ints with a number object manually, it works. The messages that come out of umenu are the same in all circumstances though.

I made a test project and the same behaviour occurs. Does anyone know why this happens? I suppose using a umenu for this is not best practice, but I tried with a coll and it causes the same problem...

I'm trying to customize the existence and colors of the borders of the multislider object in max 9.

I'm seeing some older reference files that mention control for this with "border_bottom 0" etc, but this doesn't seem to work, and I haven't found any help in the recent documentation.

It seems my multisliders have a bottom border of the same color of the sliders, and this seems impossible to remove.

To make it more strange, the multisliders in the help file don't have any border, but when I copy them to my patch, they have the bottom border again

Absolutely a beginner here, trying to make cymbal sounds based on this approach: 

The patch basically feeds enveloped white noise to mc.reson~ with large Q values while the resonant frequencies are generated with some exponential randomness.

The issue is that when these frequencies change, there are sometimes large and dangerous spikes in volume. 

It happens more often when changes occur faster.

My guess is that the additional loudness comes from very fast sweeps in mc.reson~ especially when passing through lower frequencies.  

I wanted to try and slow down the change in frequency with a line~ function but I don't know whether or not it is possible to combine it with setvalue message, which is the only way I know how to spread a list between mc instances.

Or perhaps the issue lies completely elsewhere....

I'm mostly interested in understanding why what's happening is happening, but if anyone knows of a better/cleaner way of synthesising cymbal sounds then I'd love to hear it as well.

Hello maxers, I've solved in the past but I don't remember. I would like to stay in other programs, but want the Max running in second window. For example if I map the keyboard with key object and I make clic on a screen of jit.window, it doesn't work. Also, if I'm writing in a TExtedit... it doesn't work. Let's imagine I would like to count how many spaces are in a writting text with Key object in Max, however if I'm on Texedit, it don't report anything...
