RNBO is remarkable, but one still cant make money off it
Well one has to say taking something as old as Max and getting it to work in a browser environment at all is a remarkable technical achievement. If it had a way of producing a UI display, I could use it for my Ptolemy project, but my request for knowing if Jitter might be available as a Java kind of applet or something was ignored, so core development in it is still rather limited. The market for audio
is glutted, and without being able to produce a UI beyond sliders and whatever, its just not that appealing to users for other applications. Of course Im tempted to do so, because I know Max, but I still cant see how I can sell it otherwise.
So, great technical achievement. The real problem for users remains that there is no way to add copy protection on an app. So it is a nice toy for academia. But it just still isn't a viable production environment, and for myself, as a user since Max 5, I am just not willing to fork out yet more money for a toy, and I can only believe that is why Cycling74's user base has been declining for a long time.
This is a little annoying to me, because I put alot of effort, a decade overall, and at least a year of work clock time into making my synthcore library at https://yofiel.com/audio/synthcore.php
I actually dont have a reason at this time to make an RNBO version, or to buy anything to do so, and that is a real problem for advancing the avaialable code base that has extended beyond me for alot of other deevelopers for a VERY LONG TIME NOW.
I note the comments on the announcement are turned off. Im very sad. Cycling74 has never needed to do that before.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by:
"The real problem for users remains that there is no way to add copy protection on an app." ?
As far as my research gleaned, the license was open even (for the the current release version) for commercial ventures.
Ernest's comment isn't about the RNBO license, it's about getting a straightforward way for someone releasing software to prevent someone who purchases it from giving it to all their friends and random strangers.
Presumably one can put RNBO-generated code into a VST using JUCE and there are probably decent solutions for copy protection that work inside JUCE framework. But those don't apply to Max standalone Apps, or Max for Live devices etc.
There is no viable way to secure software from being copied by random strangers.
That's why you can easily find any paid plugin/software/games cracked.
Adding protection is hassle for paid users. Make it a feature and users will support the author.
That's why GOG is so popular though no copyright protection is present in any of the games.
