I've managed to translate the ascending insert-sort algorithm into GenExpr, but there are issues to be solved.

Mainly, it seems like it always miss some values, resulting in a semi-sorted buffer... ?

Do you think is a problem related to signed floating values ?

Is there a way to create an integer variable (not a constant) in GenExpr so the for-loops are more precise ?

I've also tried with [data] before with the same code, but It always gives me weird errors (gen~ kernel, unable to compile, etc...)

btw I'm doing this in order to modify the gen-chopper-repeat patch so that I can play grains by reading an index sorted by RMS values, so of course the more precise is the sorting the better. (the concept is that of grain-tagging, something like CataRT by IRCAM).

I noticed one thing though, if you try and work with longer buffers the sorting contains less samples than the input. 

Yes -- the Max console hints at why: "gen~: audio processing exception: Too many iterations (runaway loop?)"

For safety, gen~ forces a limit on how many loop iterations can happen on each vector -- this limit is currently defined as 100000 * vector size. The reason for doing this is that too many iterations can cause an audio dropout, and infinite iterations will lock up the entire audio thread (possibly crashing it). Per Turing, there's no way to know in advance if a given piece of code will loop forever, so we work around this by having the loop iteration limit and bailing out of audio processing when this limit is reached -- and printing the warning to the Max console.

Although the buffer size in your patcher is 44100 samples long, and thus less than the loop limit, the insert-sort algorithm can cause millions of iterations due to the nested loop. This really is too many to process within one signal vector, and would cause audio dropouts. 

To process millions of samples in gen~, the solution is to distribute processing over time. Sadly there's not an easy way to convert the code to do this -- but after a bit of manual work, here it is working. What I found interesting in this is that the semantics of the code became a bit more obvious:

Note that if you want it to sort faster, you can wrap that final if() block in a for loop, but this will increase the CPU load:

Another option is to process the insertion sort via some non-gen~ solution. If you still want to use GenExpr, you could actually achieve it via jit.gen and jit.buffer~, but I don't think insertion sort is the best sorting algorithm to use, as it can't take advantage of the parallelism of cell-based processing. sample-sort, quick-sort, aa-sort etc. might work better.

i've just noticed something weird when using more than one delay in a gen~ patcher (see the example below)

 With a feedback value of 1, there should be no decay but this is only the case for the first delay, not the second one... unless the delay times are multiples of each other !

I have a gen~ patch that contains several copies of a gen abstraction, which is a bank of codebox filters in series, and the abstractions sum together before they are output into the MSP world. I can have three copies of the abstraction in a gen~ patch with no problem, but when I add a fourth I get an error message;

“gen_domain: dsp.gen: [string "gen2.Module"]:151: invalid replacement value (a nil)”. I presume this means I have one of the filters throwing 

If I’m on the right track then the rest of the message should tell me where this is happening. Can anyone help me decode the message? I have been using Gen for a while but this is new to me.

Hi! I'm trying to implement reverse delay on a different project that I have. Last week I have implemented different algorithms, but in all of them I have been dealing with weird clicks.To help demonstrate the problem I'm facing, I have build a very basic reverse delay here.... with a fixed buffer of sample rate size (so, 1 second), with variable time (difference between read and write starting position). Feedback control and mix between wet & dry. I've been using a single data object buffer, with poke and peek. I've tried different interpolations on peek, and have stick with linear or cubic. I also have a boundmode wrap at peek.

I'm attaching my code here, so you guys can check. The click is not SO pronounced... but I would like to remove it if possible.

So I've been working on this Gen~ stutter patch with the intent of building a DaisySeed powered guitar pedal, and while I've gotten the stutter effect to function as intended, I'm currently struggling to figure out why there's still an occasional pop/click sound.

I initially thought the issue might be stemming from either the phasor changing its rate along side the random number generator, a quick succession of envelopes depending on the threshold setting for resetting the phasor's rate or the poke/peek object storing and playing back the buffered sample. But nothing I alter seems to resolve the issue I've been having.

I even tried applying a heavy low pass filter as well to remove the click sound, as well as removing the effect entirely to diagnosis the issue, only hear the issue persisting with the dry signal portion of the patch as well. At this point I'm completely confused with what the issue might be. 

Here's a download for the max patch. It's not as noticeable on percussion audio files, but is very apparent on clean guitar samples. Any help diagnosing the issue and suggesting how to remedy it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! I've successfully managed to recreate pitch movement in a delay by changing the write and read index position. In hindsight my issue with this is that after the delay time has reached it's target, all pitching goes back to normal, because now the difference between read and write index is constant again and there is no more doppler effect. The only way to combat this is having a really long smoothing time between tempo changes but it seems inelegant.

I'm looking to fully recreate the effect of a slowed down tape:

When I change the delay time, the whole 'tape' changes tempo and all previously recorded sounds are staying pitched forever, only newly recorded sounds are at the 'correct' pitch. As I understand it, for this model, the read and write heads (index position) stay constant, and the delay time is only effected by the speed of the tape.

My thought process was therefore to keep the index positions at a constant difference, and only change the rate of the phasor writing and reading the data buffer.

I've found an amazing forum post that tackles the exact questionI have. I tried to implement everything but I failed to do so correctly. Maybe somebody with more gen/max knowledge would know of a better way to convert this explanation into gen.
