In MaxForLive, I can easily get the frame count from a movie by inserting 'read, getframecount' and routing it from the jit.movie dumpout. (see patch attached)

But now I have a jit.playlist and I can't find how to have that frame count update when I switch between movies. I tried to get the frame count from the jit.pwindow dumpout or from the jit.playlist content, nothing works. What am I missing?

In this configuration I'm having problems with the locked_bgcolor attribute when set to a Dynamic color name ("Device Background").

Trouble is, it's only happening in .amxd that I froze/exported a while back, and which have worked correctly for more than a year.  

I've tried to reproduce the issue from scratch by mixing and matching devices exported from Max as old as 8.3.3, but I can't seem to cause the problem.

Pictures of the issue below.  Is anyone else able to reproduce something like this?

An open question for M4L makers: Has anyone done anything to automate (at least partly) the build and distribution process of a M4L device? For me, it still involves manual steps that I'd like to avoid (by some Apple scripting magic maybe?)

1. clean out all those pesky unfrozen externals and subpatches that Live scatters everywhere on the system and that can possibly be picked up with the new  build

2. open a new Live set, add the source device

3. freeze and save to the distribution dir

An open question for M4L makers: Has anyone done anything to automate (at least partly) the build and distribution process of a M4L device?...

Alright, this is an odd one and probably involves something simple I'm missing, but...

I've been working on some devices, and I've noticed that certain dials (With ☒ Initial Enable and a preset value defined) don't seem to send their value until I adjust them. Is there something I'm missing?

and use decimal, not hex.
You don't want to convert note number to hex and back to decimal to be able to send that out, right ?
or use sprintf and iter to convert hex to decimal on the fly,
if you want to keep all hex.

I could program myself a hex-dec converter in max for live, like above, and then manually enter it into the messagebox ;-)



you can also use [textedit] to enter the hex values (once you get it going, because it is a bit strange by default)


Use the sxformat object, in your case this is an example:

[sxformat 0xF0 0x43 0x10 0x12 0x11 0x00 0xF7] which is [sxformat 240 67 16 18 17 0 247]

You can select any part of the SysEx message to be dynamic and accept it via the 1st, 2nd, 3rd ... nth inlet, like this:

[sxformat 240 67 / is $i1 / is $i2 / is $i3 / 0 247]

for example, so that you could swap 16, 17, and 18 to different numbers and execute the sysex command, just be sure to connect a bang to the left inlet from the second, third, ...nth inlet, because those are BLUE, cold inlets and they don't bang the sxformat object on their own.
Check [sxformat] help to see a dial changing a parameter in an example SysEx command.

Thats what I was looking for.
I discovered it a couple of days before.
Works fine.
I am using it for switching the registrations on a GENOS keyboard with ableton live.


The only reason I see to use sxformat instead of a simple message is if one needs checksum.
otherwise, this is much simpler

Yes, in my case this was the way to go; once i wrote a SysEx editor for the volca fm and that needed checksum to be calculated as per the current parameters, but when I do a full dump, it’s just a very long message directly going to [midiout]

Today I tried the new Track.create_midi_clip function which is available as of 12.1.10. I noticed that after calling the function, the clip is created correctly, but the return ID (returned by live.object) is 0 instead of the ID of the clip that was created. I double checked with other similar functions like song.create_scene, clip_slot.create_clip etc. On these functions live.object returns the ID of the newly created item. See attached patch.

So Track.create_midi_clip doesn't. That sounds like a bug right? 

Is there an alternative way to find out which clip I just created?

I want my device width to adjust when in different states. Window size, window exec doesn't seem to work when not in edit mode.. Is this a limitation or am I missing someting?

Just to be clear I don't want to set a fixed device width (nor clear it), I'd want to be able to change the width dynamically, without entering edit mode... Anyone?
