I've made a device in M4L whose parameters I control with a Faderfox EC4. Mostly it works great. 

I am trying to set up an init button that would send starting values to the parameters in the patch and to the EC4. I am doing this to avoid parameter jumps when the controller and parameters have gotten out of sync (on startup, or if I've been editing some things in the patch). 

As of now, I am using udpsend to send data to a Max patch which sets the value to the EC4. It works but it's not very elegant. 

I feel like there is another way to do this that I am overlooking. What am I missing?

Hi all, I'm building a simple frequency analyzer M4L device using Volker Böhm's 64-bit version of fiddle~ (found here: https://cycling74.com/forums/fiddle-64-bit-version). I've noticed that when I load more than one instance of this device, each one on its own track, the frequency output of all of the fiddle~ objects in the Live set gets glitchy. It seems to alternate between 0, numbers in the tens-of-thousands, and accurate values. This behaviour stops as soon as the set goes back to having only one fiddle~ object in it.

The problem doesn't happen when multiple fiddle~s are loaded in a regular Max patch. It also doesn't occur if multiple fiddle~s are present in a single M4L device. It doesn't even happen if multiple devices are loaded on the same track.

Even weirder: let's say you have a single track, (1), with two M4L devices containing fiddle~, (1a) and (1b). Then you add a second track, (2), with another device containing fiddle~, (2a). At this point, (1a) and (2a) will be glitchy, but (1b) will be fine. If you then add a second fiddle~ device (2b) to track (2), (1b) will become glitchy. From this, it seems as if the M4L devices in corresponding slots across multiple tracks are affecting each other.

To see if the placement/ordering in the effects rack is what determines this, I created two tracks with fiddle~ devices, and then placed a Live Audio Effect (EQ Eight) before the fiddle~ device on one of the tracks. The glitchiness still happened. Adding a blank MaxForLive effect before the fiddle~ device also didn't prevent the glitches. In other words, it doesn't seem like the absolute position of the fiddle~ devices in the effects racks has to be the same across multiple tracks for this to happen. Rather, it seems like the first instance of fiddle~ device on one track will cause all the first instances of fiddle~ on other tracks to glitch out, the second instance will mess up all the second instances, etc., regardless of other effects/devices on the track.

Hopefully this convoluted account clarifies more than it obscures! It's very strange behaviour.

In case it helps, I'm attaching an M4L device containing fiddle~ and one containing sigmund~ (see below), as well as a Live 10 set where the behaviour is visible.

Edit: I just tested with sigmund~, and it's having the same problem. I added a gate~ to my test device, and found that sigmund~ and fiddle~ both glitch out even if the devices in the other tracks aren't receiving a signal.

If you're tracking a monophonic signal, would the native [retune~ @pitchdetection 1] do the job?

Hi Jean-Francois! Unfortunately [retune~] seems to have difficulty accurately reporting the frequency of a sine wave - in my experiments using [cycle~] as an input, it tracks accurately bet the frequency between about 95 Hz and 875 Hz, but outside that range it's inaccurate. [fzero~] has a slightly better range, but still only tracks a sine input accurately up to about 4.5 KHz. [fiddle~] seems to have much better accuracy with sine inputs, but unfortunately this weird M4L issue makes it unusable for me at the moment.

I'm making a Max For Live patch that records audio, independently of Live (sfrecord~), and saves it to a location. I've got it working with an [opendialog] but it'd be great if the user didn't have to specify where to save it every time the patch is loaded. E.g., within Ableton's User Library folder.

If it's for your own use, just manually create that folder
and use absolute path to it to write files.
If you want that to work on other machines, than
use shell or something similar like jasch's createfolder external to auto create that folder.
I am not using Live, but I guess that it dictates where that user library is, or ?
You can use sprintf or combine to make full path out of
that folder's path and audio file name.
Mind you -  sfrecord~ will overwrite any file without warning
when it receives message open with the path appended.
If that is issue, than you could first check if file allready exists
or not.


It would be for use on other peoples' machines, yes. I'm taking a look at shell currently, but I'm also stuck trying to include an external as part of a patch for other users (I submitted a topic precisely about this earlier). I thought maybe there was a way to do this using Max 'vanilla'.

I'll check out Jasch's createfolder too, see if it'll do what I'd like.

Yeah I've got the location of the User Library now.  (Users/(user)/Music/Ableton/User Library) for those who might need it.

I've got the filename time-stamping so the filename for sfrecord~ will always be different (ie not overwite) if that's what you mean?

You can short user path on mac using
~/Music/Ableton/User Library

Shell needs slash based path, same output would also work for
createfolder external.


There should be no problem to include externals into
max4live device, I think you should find a tutorial how to do that,
but what might become a problem is Mac OS restrictions,
see the posts about shell and gatekeeper on Catalina.

And timestamp is a good approach for the files.
Maybe One could use project - track name + timestamp,
that can be done using Live Object I think.

And mkdir is the message for the shell, 
mkdir + path

It already have [createfolder] but it seems to be only for Mac...
..and I really don't know shell...:/

I made a device that is essentially 48 LFOs (each LFO is its own bpatcher) and map buttons to control 8 different 6 channel lights, and a single use of this device hogs about 10-12% of the Ableton CPU bar, and I want 2 of these in my setup. 

The CPU is that high even after deleting all the connections within the Bpatcher, and it seems there isn't one particular object or group of objects within the Bpatcher being the culprit, it's just the fact there's many objects within the Bpatcher that causes the CPU to be that high. As in, I've tried to painstakingly remove objects one at a time, and I'm finding that it's not one object, it's just the culmination of all of the objects existing doing nothing in the same patcher, and then having 48 of that patcher, is causing the CPU to be that high. 

I've also tried just having all 48 LFOs in the main patcher, no Bpatcher, and it only seemed to save me about 1%. 

Anyway, is there a way to make this not happen, so that way I can effectively have 48 LFOs in the same device that can be organized by presets without taxing my CPU? I've attached the device for anyone curious to look at

how stable is the Hi object in max4live ?

i have a device i made to get midi out of a wireless xbox360 game joystick

and its actually very cool controller , wireless , handy, functional,

and i want to use it so the singer will have a control for her voice channel fx

most of the times i need to load the device and delete it and reload it again

and only after some time it actually finds the controller , 

or i need to open the max editor and then it works from there,

but thats not an option for a live performance , i need to have the device working flawless...

i get a message in the max window under max4live , the object is loading oko

and try to find a remote or any HID device and finds 0 devices.

any one have any info on that or another way of communicating with joysticks?
