Zoom L-12 not working with Max

I have a Zoom L-12, which has the option to act as an audio interface via a switch on the back. I have the most recent firmware update on the L-12 and updated drivers for an MBP. Running Max 8.0.4.

If I set the L-12 as the audio output, it hangs for a few seconds before starting up audio. Once "active," I get what looks like DC on Max's master output meter - the bar fills up to 0dB and stays there, whether audio is happening or not. If I play a basic test patch (cherokee.aif -> live.gain~ -> ezdac~), no sound is played, and the playhead of the playlist~ object doesn't move.

Is anyone else having this issue? The L-12 works just fine as an interface in Logic and Live, so it seems like it's more Max than the driver.
